Home to hard working people, Oklahoma’s State Motto is “Labor Omnia Vincit” (Labor Conquers All Things). Oklahoma is known as the Sooner State because in 1889, when the territory was opened to settlers, thousands of people lined up on the border and, when the signal was given, raced into the territory to claim their land. Some people were so eager to build their new lives that they went in early to claim their land. They became known as Sooners.
Interesting Oklahoma facts:
Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state, with over one million surface areas of water and 2,000 more miles of shoreline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined.
Oklahoma’s four mountain ranges include the Ouachitas, Arbuckles, Wichitas, and the Kiamichis.
Oklahoma is the third largest natural gas-producing state in the nation.
Forests cover approximately 24% of Oklahoma.
Oklahoma’s name comes from two Choctaw Indian words meaning “red people”
Oklahoma has the largest Native American population of any other state. Many of the 250,000 American Indians living in the state are descended from 67 tribes who inhabited Indian Territory. Tribal headquarters for 39 tribes are in Oklahoma.
In Gurhrie nearly 20,000 lighters and “fire starters” are displayed at the National Lighter Museum. The nation’s only museum devoted to the collection of lighters.
There is an operating oil well on state capitol grounds called Capitol Site No. 1.
