FACTS ABOUT NEVADA
A GREAT TEAM BUILDING LOCATION
From out at sea on the Pacific coast, Spanish sailors gazed upon the beautiful mountain ranges. They called these mountains Sierra Nevada (snowy range). Sierra Nevada seemed an apt name for the new territory that was being carved out of Utah, but when the deed was done in 1859, the name of this new territory had been shortened to Nevada, the Spanish word meaning snow-covered. Nevada is now on of the fastest growing states in America.
Nevada is also known as the Silver State. Interestingly enough, Nevada is also the largest gold-producing state in the nation, and second largest in the world behind South Africa.
Despite the name’s derivation from the Spanish word nevada meaning “snowy”, the local pronunciation of the state’s name is not “Ne-vah-da”, the middle syllable has a short a sound as in cat or hat.
Hoover Dam, the largest single public works project in the history of the United States, contains 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete, which is enough to pave a two-lane highway from San Francisco to New York. Once the highest concrete dam in the world, Hoover Dam offers guided tours and a museum of artifacts of the construction and its workers.
Las Vegas, Nevada has more hotel rooms than any other place on earth. Ben Siegel named his Las Vegas casino “The Flamingo” for the long legs of his showgirl sweetheart, Virginia Hill.
Another interesting Nevada fact, the longest morse code telegram ever sent was the Nevada state constitution, sent from Carson City to Washington D.C. in 1864. The transmission must have taken several hours.
