Known as the “North Star State”, Minnesota is a state whose people know the direction they want to go and do whatever it takes to get there. Minneapolis’ famed skyway system connecting 52 blocks (approximately five miles) of downtown makes it possible to live, eat, work and shop without ever going outside.
Minnesota’s name is from the Dakota people’s word for the Minnesota River, “mini sota”, translated as “smoky-white water” or “sky-tinted water.”
The state is a major food producer for the country, and has a number of natural resources that have been greatly utilized in the last two centuries. Known also as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota actually has more than 12,000 lakes. In fact, Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline, more than California, Florida and Hawaii combined.
