FACTS ABOUT MAINE
A GREAT TEAM BUILDING LOCATION
Maine is home to Eastport, the most eastern city in the United States. The city is considered the first place in the United States to receive the rays of the morning sun. At night, numerous lighthouses dot the Maine coast including Fort Point Lighthouse at Fort Point State Park in Stockton Springs and Grindle Point Lighthouse on Isleboro, to ensure the safety of those at sea.
It is rumored that Maine, an tranquil land in the North East United States, received it’s name because the people living on islands along the coast of Maine used to speak of going to the mainland as “going over to the Main.”
Maine’s agricultural outputs are seafood (notably Maine Lobsters), poultry and eggs, dairy products, cattle, blueberries, apples, and maple sugar. Western Maine aquifers and springs are a major source of bottled water. Its industrial outputs are paper, lumber, and wood products, electronic equipment, leather products, food processing, textiles, and tourism. Naval shipbuilding and construction also remain key components of Maine’s economy.
An interesting historical note, in 1839 Maine declared war on England over a boundary dispute between New Brunswick and northern Maine. Known as the Aroostook War, this is the first and only time a U.S. State has declared war on a foreign power. The dispute was settled, however, before any blood was shed.
Famous people from Maine include writers Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Stephen King as well as entrepreneurs L.L. Bean, Chester Greenwood, Milton Bradley and Percy Lebaron Spencer who invented the microwave oven.
