Florida is a Spanish adjective meaning flowery. The peninsula was named by Juan Ponce de Leon, who landed on its coast in April of 1513, looking for the fountain of youth. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Florida is now a popular destination and home for for young families, young-at-heart business-people and senior Americans seeking a place to live and stay young no matter what their chronological age.

Florida is a state in the southeast United States, situated on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida.

Florida’s economy is heavily based on tourism. About 40 – 45 million visitors come to Florida each year to enjoy the warm weather and hundreds of miles of beach. The Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort are popular destinations. The great amount of sales and tourist tax revenue is what allows the state to be one of the few to not levy a personal income tax. Interestingly, Florida is one of the nine states which do not impose a personal income tax.

Other major industries include citrus fruit and juice production, banking, and mining. With the arrival of the space program at Kennedy Space Center in the 1960’s, Florida has attracted a great deal of aerospace and military industry to the state.
